The combination of the the two updates recommended here, and the "Windows Update Diagnostic" finally allowed me to run the normal automatic Windows Update. I had the same issue on Dell XPS 8300 Windows 7 Home. Even if it didn't, it was worth a try. It took me all day but everything is up to date now! Apparently installing KB3138612 had fixed whatever issue was preventing the Standalone Installer from finding the updates once expanded.
